Small Business in America: 1950 – 2022

Small Business in America passed away peacefully in its sleep on March 1, 2022. It was 72 years old.

Small Business had a long and storied career, contributing significantly to the American economy and cultural landscape. It created jobs, fostered innovation, and brought unique products and services to local communities. Unfortunately, Small Business had been in declining health for some time and ultimately succumbed to a number of factors that proved too much to overcome.

First and foremost, COVID-19 dealt a devastating blow to Small Business. Shutdowns, social distancing, and reduced foot traffic made it impossible for many small businesses to stay afloat. Despite government aid, many were forced to close their doors for good. Small Business fought valiantly, but in the end, it just couldn’t compete with a global pandemic.

But COVID-19 was just one factor contributing to Small Business’s demise. Taxes, insurance premiums, and other costs of doing business had been steadily rising for years, making it harder and harder for small businesses to turn a profit. With big business and AI on the rise, Small Business was facing ever-increasing health issues.

To make matters worse, the younger generations simply weren’t interested in working in small businesses anymore. They preferred the stability and benefits of big corporations, leaving Small Business struggling to find workers and qualified staff. Customer complacency also compounded things with the right-here-right-now ideology of online retail and no-questions-asked returns that Small Business just couldn’t compete with.

Despite these challenges, Small Business soldiered on well into its golden years, driven by the passion and determination of its owners. But in the end, passion and determination weren’t enough. Small Business leaves behind a legacy of entrepreneurship, hard work, and community spirit that will be sorely missed.

Small Business is survived by big corporations, online retailers, and AI-powered robots. In lieu of flowers, please don’t complain when you can’t find a local contractor, mechanic, agent, or store. Small Business will sorely be missed by all.
